Hands

This time last year I made a difficult decision to enrol in my local college to take Photography for A-level. I’d always wanted to do this when I did all of my other A-levels but did not have the option at my school. It was a massive risk to do it along with my degree but I am happy to say it worked out and I got a very high A grade.

One of my favourite aspects of the course was my Identity project that allowed me to explore how myself and others see mixed-race people’s identity. It challenged how I felt about being mixed-race and also how I thought others perceived me.

The photos below were the first I took for this project. I felt that hands are often used as symbols of identity (for example unique finger printing) and the very blunt use of black and white paint would allow my subject to express how she thought about being both black and white.
